Supervisory board as a shaper of strategy and structure

Supervisory board as a shaper of strategy and structure (Titel) Dr. Carsten B. Henkel, Managing Partner of the Zürich office, and Martin C. Wittig, Member of the Global Executive Committee, are featured in an article in the May 13, 2008 issue of the business magazine "Bilanz". They share insights regarding the role of the supervisory board in shaping strategy and structure.

As the highest authority of a company, the supervisory board is the strategic executive body. In a process with clearly defined responsibilities, the supervisory board works with top management to outline corporate strategy. This results in demands being placed on the supervisory board's composition, and particularly on the individual skills of each board member as well.

A company's strategy as well as its organizational structure is aligned by the supervisory board to the challenges of the market. This means that action taken during a growth phase differs from that during a time of consolidation or crisis. Goals for the medium term can include penetrating specific customer segments or geographic markets, developing new products or pushing certain technologies.
